Hello, I'm Jenice!
And this is my blog where I share about things, particularly food, that I love! My husband and I work together to make our blog a reality - I am the creative mind developing the recipes, writing the posts and staging the pictures. My husband is behind the scenes and behind the camera, taking amazing shots and ensuring our site runs seamlessly.
I am passionate about family, community and the outdoors. Whenever I can bring these three together it is a piece of heaven for me and I find food is often a great key in uniting them! Here at Alaskan Skillet you will find recipes that I love to cook and share with others in our every day life. I absolutely love it when people tell me, "Jenice, this is so good!" and I can reply, "Thank you! It's SO easy!" I focus on simple recipes with accessible ingredients that I keep (and I think others keep) on hand.
Alaskan Skillet's Philosophy
As a full-time mom and blogger, juggling household tasks and getting dinner on the table, I understand how overwhelming life can be-whether you work inside or outside the home. Here at Alaskan Skillet you will find recipes that are:
- Relatable - I focus on recipes that are recognizable, easy to follow and easy to source. Simple and easy is my mantra - I will rarely try or share a recipe if it's too complex.
- Delicious - If it's not tasty, it's not here. I want your food to be simple but still amazingly delicious. Our goal is always to have people comment on how wonderful the meal or dessert is!
- Accessible - I try to keep my ingredients simple, recognizable and easy to find.
- Adaptable - Many of my recipes are easy to adapt to varying sizes of groups and are often adaptable for food sensitivities and picky eaters too!
- Fun! - I hope you just love making these recipes! Many recipes can be cooked indoors and outdoors, over a fire, over a grill or over a stove. Take them on your adventures, make them yours, and make memories with them!
A Little Deeper
I grew up on a small acreage in northern Alberta, Canada, surrounded by open country. My childhood was filled with exploring the hills, riding horses, playing in the mud, swimming in the dugouts, and skiing and sledding through long winters. I didn't realize then how rare and special those experiences were, but now I see how lucky I was-and I hope to pass some of that same sense of adventure on to my own young family.
Meals were always a shared time in our family. We gathered around the table for breakfast and dinner, talking about our days and praying together. It was such a gift. Food was always a main part of events or was the main event itself! Rollkuchen in the summer, New Year's Fritters in the winter and bannock over the campfires.
I attribute my love for cooking to a few areas of my life. I spent a lot of time in my childhood in the kitchen with my mom. I'd help her make cookies, jar fruits in the summer and make multiple Christmas treats in the winter. When I was older I had the opportunity to work for and room with my inventive and creative cousins. They taught me to love new foods, step outside my comfort zone and throw measuring out the window!
How did I get to Alaska? Great question! My husband grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska. After spending time up here with him, I fell in love with the state, the outdoor adventures and the amazing scenery (but not so much the bugs!). After we got married I moved up and have only fallen in love more as we've grown our family, welcoming our two daughters in 2021 and 2023.
We decided to start a blog largely out of a love for our family, the desire to adventure and do as much of life together as possible. Our goal is to both be working from home on the blog, with our girls and free to pick up and go whenever we desire!
