This Best Spice for Salmon is a simple blend of light, savory and smoky flavors that perfectly complements salmon without overpowering it. Just sprinkle it over your salmon, pop it in the oven and in less than 15 minutes you have a flavorful, nutritious dinner. This spice is delicious on its own or works beautifully when adding your salmon to salads, pasta or rice bowls, as it complements other flavors without overpowering them. This is the way my mom always cooked salmon growing up, and the mix came from a handwritten card she had in her recipe box. Where the original recipe came from, I don't know, but I'm grateful whoever created it passed it along to my mom - and eventually into my recipe box.

Why I Love This

  1. Unique: This spice is a blend that I feel is unique and unlike what you could buy in the store.
  2. Stand Alone: Adding this to your salmon gives it enough flavor to be eaten on it's own, making your meal quick and simple when this Best Spice for Salmon is prepped ahead of time.
  3. Perfect Pairing: While this blend does have ample flavor on it's own, it is fresh and light enough that you use it even when you intend to add your fish to a salad, pasta or other main dish without having to worry about competing flavors.

  • Seasoned Salt - is the main ingredient that this Best Spice for Salmon is built on which keeps it light and fresh
  • Chili Powder - brings a touch of warmth to the spice and adds depth and richness.
  • Garlic Powder - creates a grounding element that helps to enhance the flavors of the spices and salmon.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

A glass bowl with all the spices poured in but not mixed together.

Step 1: Combine all spices into a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Place in plastic container or jar with lid for storage.

Step 2: Lightly sprinkle on fish (not just salmon) or poultry for delicious flavor!

Hint: This recipe is meant for creating a large batch at one time. If you wish to make a smaller amount feel free to half or quarter the recipe.

Variations

  • Spicy - add chili pepper flakes to the blend or up the amount of chili powder and cayenne.
  • Less Salt - try reducing the amount of seasoned salt in the mix. This will bring down the saltiness and boost the flavors of the other spices!
  • Red Meat Blend - mix a small amount of the blend with some Italian seasoning for the perfect red meat spice! Try adding a touch of brown sugar to sweeten things up!

Try my Blackened Halibut Tacos (and use this spice instead for a milder version!) or my Halibut Pasta (add this spice for more flavor!) for a cozy night in.

Storage

You can store this spice in your cupboard indefinitely in a plastic container or glass jar (my preference).

Top Tip

Try changing the level of spice/heat or bringing the amount of saltiness down according to your liking! That's the beauty of creating your own blend - you can make it suit your style! Be creative and have fun!

FAQ

Is this spice only good for salmon?

No! You can use this spice on any fish or poultry. You can also blend it with other spices to create excellent red meat seasonings (see above).
