This Honey Mayo Mustard Sauce is smoky in flavor, smooth in texture and bursting with sweet, tangy and slightly spicy notes. With just 7 simple ingredients and one bowl, this easy sauce comes together in under 5 minutes. It's perfect for pretzels, chips, crackers, chicken wings, grilled salmon or chicken - making it a versatile dip you'll reach for again and again.

Why I Love This

  1. Unbelievable Flavor: This is one of those dips that you put in your mouth and your eyes go wide in pleasant surprise - over and over. It's just so good! The perfect amount of smoky heat, sultry undertones and a touch of sweet.
  2. Quick!: This Honey Mayo Mustard Sauce contains ingredients that are already in your fridge and literally gets dumped in a bowl and stirred... and then completely wows your guests!
  3. Easy Elevated Twist: Don't limit this to a dipping sauce. This is the perfect topping for salmon and chicken in all kinds of forms, bringing summer flavors all year long.

This Honey Mayo Mustard Sauce was inspired by my Sticky Chicken Drumsticks which is the perfect match! Finish the meal off with my Baked Home Fries (also amazing for dipping) or my Rosemary Basmati Rice.

Ingredients

A visual display of the ingredients needed for the Honey Mayo Mustard Sauce - mayonnaise, honey, Dijon mustard, salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika and red chili flakes - each in their own bowl.
  • Mayonnaise - it's important that you use "plain" mayonnaise (like Hellmann's) and not a sweetened sandwich spread/salad dressing as this will greatly change the flavor profile.
  • Dijon Mustard - this is what brings the delightful tang to our sauce. Something like a seeded mustard could be used in place but won't be as bold of a flavor.
  • Honey - be sure to use a liquid honey that is soft enough to be stirred in. If your honey is getting a little stiff or grainy, a few seconds in the microwave will solve the issue.
  • Seasonings - a few spices are used to really take the flavors up a notch. The red chili flakes are optional.

See recipe card for quantities.

Step 2: Serve as dip for your favorite wings, pretzels or chips, or use to top poultry and fish.

Hint: Serve with the red chili flakes on the side instead of adding them in, allowing everyone to decide their preferred level of heat.

Substitutions

  • Mayo Swap (egg free/dairy free) - good alternatives for this are greek yogurt, sour cream or a vegan mayo option
  • Honey Swap - agave nectar is the closest substitute. You can also use maple syrup, brown sugar or regular sugar although these three will be sweeter. I would recommend starting with about ⅔'s the amount and adding a splash of white vinegar to balance the flavor.
  • Mustard Swap - using yellow mustard will give a milder flavor, spicy brown mustard a deeper and more bold flavor and whole grain mustard a rustic touch with some added texture.

Variations

  • Spicy - add extra red chili flakes, add cayenne pepper or use a hot honey in place of the honey
  • Tangy - add a splash of apple cider vinegar if you like a little extra zip in your sauce
  • Kid friendly - using yellow mustard in place of the Dijon will produce a milder flavor

Storage

The first few days: Store this Honey Mustard Mayo Sauce in the refrigerator in an sealed container for up to 5 days.

Freezing: I don't recommend freezing this as it can separate and have a change in texture when thawed.

Top Tip

This is the sauce that keeps on giving. Make it serve with your drumsticks, then add it to your shredded chicken for supper the next evening and then, if anything is left, you can serve it up as a great appetizer side with pretzels, chips and crackers.

FAQ

Can I make this sauce without mayo?

Yes! You can use Greek yogurt, sour cream or a vegan mayo. See the substitutions portion above!

Is Honey Mayo Mustard Sauce spicy?

It doesn't have to be. Using yellow mustard will still give great flavor with far less "zing." You can also adjust the spices to your taste. If you're on the other side of the fence you can make it as spicy as you like - check out my variations section above for ideas.

How do I make this dip healthier?

You can swap the mayo for Greek yogurt, do half mayo and half yogurt or use a fat free mayonnaise option.

This dip is so delicious! I love how versatile it is too. It's perfect for dipping chips, crackers, pretzels, wings and drumsticks. Most recently, we used it to top our salmon fillet. It was so good!
